Did I kill my lawnmower. Part two?

March 27th, 2009
matters asked:

So yesterday I got a new electric start, self propelled, walk behind toro mower. I made the mistake of only putting in about a quarter of the oil it needed, and did not charge it before I ran it (it did start without a charge) It ran for about 1/2 hour and then cut off. I charged the battery, added oil and now it will not start. It will click once when I turn the key. Any ideas of something else to try before I pay someone to look at it?

How much acetone should I mix with 1 Qt. of Rustoleum Oil-based paint for spraying?

March 27th, 2009
Duv78 asked:

I’m using a small electric dewalt paint sprayer that uses the plastic cup that screws into the spray gun. I want to spray the paint on an old riding mower instead of rolling it. Just to make it smoother.

Toro Snowblower Repair Tips Requested - Model:38175 ?

March 26th, 2009
Chris asked:

Hello,
I have a snowblower that has sat for over 5 years with less than 50 hours on it. It will not start now.
It’s a Model:38175 Toro CCR Powerlite-e - Electric Start 1000*** series year 1991

I put fresh gas/oil mixure per manual. (Tank was emptied prior to storage.) I put in a new spark plug matching the old. Still it would not start.

I used carb cleaner and sprayed it in the carb via breather. The engine would run until what I would say. “The cleaner burnt off and the engine ran out of gas”. So, i’d say. Because it started briefly it is getting a spark and capable of running. But, it’s just not getting gas.

I went to prime it and the primer button shattered under my thumb from dry rot. I replaced the primer with the primer from my old toro snowblower.

Are there any other rubber or neopreme gaskets in this model that could have dry rotted and causing it not to start? (I know when I bought a used lawn mower this summer. The guy took the carb off and replaced a rubber gasket that acted like a fuel pump some how).

Does this model have something like that could have rotted?

Well, tomorrow I am checking hoses from tank and primer to carb.

Anyone else have any suggestions on what to look for ,replace or try as well?

a detailed part drawing can be found here if you type in the model number.

I am a tinkerer. I am not an expert. SO, please please please use part numbers with layman terms on things i should try or replace.

Thanks all in ADVANCE
Thanks Everyone who ANSWERED.

I found a local High School Vocational School with a small engine shop 3 blocks away from me.

Costed me $25.00 in parts. Labor was free due to the students doing the repair. (Check your local school though)

I dropped it off at 9:00 am and by 11 am sameday. I had it back in working order.

Probelm was with the float, needle and something else being corroded. They did say it was not gel build up. but, like rust corrosion from sitting so many years.

Thanks again, to all who provided thier input.

AND, I MUST ADD. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS. THEY WERE THERE FOR ME.

Life Aboard A Submarine?

March 24th, 2009
Mick asked:

Spend as much time as you can indoors during the daytime, stay out of direct sunlight. Go to work only before sunrise and come home after sunset.

Paint everything around you Sea Foam Green (Navy NSN Green, no substitutions) or Off-White to be sure you are living in a clean, happy environment. Every Friday, set an alarm on loud for a short, but hated, drill sound. Then get up and manned only with a bucket, sponge and a greeny. Clean one area over and over, even if it is already spotless.

Eat food that you can only get out of a can and requires water in order to eat it. Empty out your refrigerator and turn the temperature control down, turning the refrigerator into a freezer. Get rid of all fresh fruits and vegetables.

Repeat back everything spoken to you. Repeat back everything spoken to you.

Sit in your car for six hours at a time with the motor running. Keep hands on the wheel. But don’t leave your driveway. Log readings of your oil pressure, water temperature, speedometer and odometer every 15 minutes.

Put Lube Oil in your humidifier instead of water. Set it on high.

Buy a trash compactor; use it only once a week. Store the rest of the garbage in your bathroom.

Don’t watch movies except in the middle of the night. Have your family vote on which movie to watch, then show a different one.

Have the paperboy give you a standard Navy haircut.

Take hourly readings on your water and your electric meters. But only for a six hour period.

Sleep with your dirty laundry.

For you old mechanics, set your lawn mower in the middle of the living room while it is running. Only for six hours a day.

Invite guests but don’t prepare enough food for everyone. Serve food cold. Limit the time they sit at the table to 10 minutes.

Wake up at midnight every night and make a peanut butter sandwich, use stale bread. Better yet, make your own bread but cut 3 inch thick slices and use these. Optional: warm up some canned Ravioli or soup.

Make your family a menu for the week without knowing what food is in the cabinets.

Set your alarm clock for various times at night; adjust the volume to the maximum. When it goes off, jump out of bed, get your clothes on as fast as you can, run outside and grab the garden hose. Then go back to bed and do it all again when the alarm goes off.

Once a month take apart every appliance completely and then put them back together.

Use 18 scoops of coffee per pot and allow it to sit for 5 to six hours before drinking it.

Invite at least 85 people you really don’t like and have them stay for a couple of months.

Store your eggs in the garbage for two months and then cook a dozen each morning.

Have a fluorescent lamp installed under your coffee table and lie underneath it to read books.

Put a complicated lock on your basement door and wear the key around your neck on a special chain.

When making cakes, prop up one side of the pan when cooking. Use extra icing to level it off.

Every so often, yell “EMERGENCY DEEP!” run into the kitchen and sweep all pots, pans and dishes off of the counters onto the floor, and then yell at your wife for not having the kitchen area “Stowed for Sea!”

Put on the stereo headphones (don’t plug them in), go to the stove and stand in front of it. Say (to no one in particular) “Stove manned and ready” stay there for 3 to 4 hours. Say (once again and to no one in particular) “Stove secured”, then role up your headphone cord and put them away.

Pull out your refrigerator and clean behind it for 4 hours and then put it back when you are done. Have your wife come and check every 10 minutes with a flashlight to see how you are doing.

When doing your laundry fill it only 1/3 full, sit in front of your washing machine in your underwear and read a book or magazine you’ve read at least 5 times before in the last week. When the wash is done, only run the dryer for half the normal time.

Fix-up a shelf in your closet that will serve as your bunk for the next six months. Take the door off of the hinges and replace them with curtains. While asleep, have family members shine a flashlight in your eyes at random intervals and say either “Sign this!” or “Sorry, wrong rack!”

If you can do these. You can do just about anything!

I just picked up a Snapper lawn mower, its an older one but rear engine mount and a manual trans. It has electric start, but nothing happens when Im hitting the button, nor does it want to start when I pull it. Other than the key, is there a cut-off switch or something Im missing? What are the steps to starting this older machine?
Thanks, but I need the actual starting procedure assuming everything works. Turn on the key to the on position…then….its a mid 70s snapper 33” rer if that helps. Elect start also.

Utility company damaged my lawn, who is liable?

March 19th, 2009
cheery asked:

My neighbor had a wooden building (shed) delivered, and because it was on top of a truck, it did not clear the power lines that were above their driveway.
The truck driver ended up pulling down the lines and made the large post which was situated on my land, split in two and fell over on the road.
The electric company turned up later to put a new post in and clamp the old post to the new (temporary).
To do this they ended up driving over on my land (5 trucks and cranes). Now my beautiful lawn, is now like a race track. Huge tire marks, huge dents, bumpy everywhere and sod ruined.
Who is liable for this? There is no way I can fix this myself. My ride on lawn mower is not going to be able to cut the lawn in this state.
There is an easement beside the road, but they were far from the easement, my whole front lawn is ruined.
Will it be the electric company or the truck driver who pulled the cables down?
I am in Oklahoma.
I am also worried about my sprinkler system.
I think some sprinklers heads are damaged too.
Because of a heavy thunderstorm came pretty much as they were finishing, I haven’t been able to check the correct amount of damage yet, apart from the obvious. It looks terrible that is all I know at the moment. I am sure they will have to come back and do the job properly as the new post is just holding up the old one by some ropes or something. Wires from other utilities are all hanging everywhere right next to my mail box. Hope they come out too and do their work. I guess they will make even more damage before the job is complete.

A question for the tree huggers?

March 19th, 2009
Joey M asked:

How many of you eco-fascist, tree hugging, hippies have perfectly manicured lawns? Do you use gas powered or electric equipment (lawn mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers)? Do you realize that by keeping your lawn nice and neat you are leaving a carbon foot print? Those of you that live in apartments, your complex probably pays for a landscaping service, and you support their leaving a carbon foot print by paying your rent. I wonder about the lawn on Al Gore’s “green” estate???? What about the White House? How “green” are Mr. Gore and President Obama?
I guess this one was too difficult for the libtards to spin…
Cindy, you’re probably right…I give it 24 hours before they have the question removed…God forbid they formulate an argument and debate the point with me…But I guess even they don’t like fighting losing battles.

How to make a make corded tool, cordless?

March 19th, 2009
Doug asked:

Hello Helpful People,

I have a corded lawn mower (Black & Decker 19″ Electric LAWNHOG™ Mulching Mower) and many of the 18v DeWalt power tools. I would love to run my lawn mower on one of my 18v DeWalt batteries. I know B&D makes a new 24v cordless lawn mower but the one I have is in great condition and I don’t want to shell out another $450 just to run cordless.

My yard is not all that big and should be able to run on the 18v if I can find a conversion kit.

Does anyone know if anyone makes this? I have searched a few different keywords but not getting any of the results that I am after.

thanks so much!
-Doug
